Luccious was an experimental being made by Zerom, a creature created from the essence of once-living Nefolians blended with Zerom’s own essence. The outcome was a synthetic-made Sygnus, which Zerom intended to use as a weapon against the Trine.
Dreigiau
The experiment’s develop was interrupted when a very young Luccious was discovered and taken by TsuYa, ZenToYa, and Zazo, who had infiltrated the heart of the corrupted city of Nefol. His given name was LuShi, which translated to “The Bane,” indicating the danger the child would one day bring to Zemi’s people. Despite that, Zemi chose to nurture the boy, hoping that providing an upbringing outside of Zerom’s influence would be enough to thwart the child’s dark destiny.
However, Luccious’ own nature continuously worked against him. Designed as a weapon, and not meant to live a normal lifetime, the boy rapidly aged to young adulthood, haunted by the spirit energies from the Mists. As his power grew, the Mists became more and more a part of his essence, until his vision was filled with simultaneous overlapping sight of both the living and spirit worlds.
Being designed to gather energy from the souls of the departed, he struggled against an internal power of immense magnitude that constantly tipped him towards Chaos. On top of that, Luccious was often unwillingly drawn into the melding of memories and emotions from departed spirits, and fought an ongoing battle to hold on to his identity as his experiences become muddled with Theirs.
In the end, though Luccious yearned to fight against Zerom and stand on the side of the Nefolians, the pressures of battle, the visions of the Mist, and his own unstable heritage pushed him into insanity and Chaos. He became what tales call the Darkstar, a terrible Dark Sygnus who struck out at Zerom and Zemi alike. He was driven by a feral force to consume the refugee Nefolians, even if that meant tracking them across the very dimensions.
Runne
Desperate to escape the Dark Sygnus, the Nefolians were forced to leave behind their home world, coming to inhabit a new planet called Runne. However, Luccious’ curse was upon them, stripping them of their connection to Zemi, their Awakened wings, and the memories of their lives in Nefol. This struck a massive weakening blow against Zemi, who no longer had a connection to the original living world or his people.
However, the Nefolians – who had now become Runnians – were not yet safe. When it became apparent that the Dark Sygnus still sought and had located their new world, even Zerom (who acknowledged he’d lost all control of his creation) reached out to Zemi in order to figure out a way to survive Luccious’ impending approach.
It was only with the help of Zemi’s son, KluYa, who was born a natural Sygnus, that Luccious was finally sealed away in the heart of the Red Moon. Sadly, this was not in time to prevent the destruction of the Runnian world, and only a fraction of the Runnian population was able to escape upon the moon-shaped satellite, few knowing that the essence of their destroyer now travelled along with them.
Coming of the Darkstar
During the Coming of the Darkstar storyline, Luccious was ultimately behind the effort to steal Incrytan and use it to destroy the elemental crystals of the Blue Planet and Red Moon. In doing this, he was breaking the seal on his own containment, and gathering energy within the Key Crystal for his release.
While he was successful, this marked the first emergence of the Ben/Cecil Sygnus, who was able to defeat Luccious and prevent his return. Unknown to anyone, however, destroying the crystals also worked to release Zemi from his containment, and he was able to seal the essence of Luccious within Luccious’ Sword, saving the Dark Sygnus from a final destruction.
The sword was then sealed within the core of the Red Moon where FuSoYa and Bahamut kept vigilant watch over it.
Wayrift
Luccious’ Sword remained a dangerous artifact from the Time Before, even in the Wayrift timeline. It was stolen by Kip OMEGA (Wayrift Chapter 78 Pg 7), and later reclaimed and placed back in the seal at the core of the Red Moon. However, upon returning the sword to the core, none realized that the Arweinydd Archodys, who was acting under Simon’s instruction, had hitched a ride along with the blade.
Later (Wayirft Chapter 89 Pg 4), Archodys uses the sword to battle against Bahamut, and to ultimately down Zemi (Wayrift Chapter 89 Pg 9) in attempt to drive Zemi to Chaos. When this didn’t work, Archodys shatters the blade (Wayrift Chapter 89 Pg 15), causing a massive dimensional distortion, and also freeing what was left of the Dark Sygnus, Luccious (Wayrift Chapter 91 Pg 1).
Though the others are fearful of Luccious at first, it quickly becomes apparent that the Dark Sygnus has lost most of his power through his prior defeat and the destruction of the sword. However, this has also cleared his mind of the Chaos and the dark influences put upon him by Zerom.
Though he still has connection and control of the Mists, and he does not deny the wrong-doing and destruction he’s caused in the past, Luccious requests a chance to redeem himself. Leviathan grants him this request (Wayrift Chapter 91 Pg 15), and Zemi becomes his caretaker.
Whether or not the Blue Planet is ready or accepting of the once Dark Sygnus is another story.
Disposition
Having an abbreviated childhood, and struggling to find acceptance among any society he’s come in contact with, Luccious holds himself somewhat distant from others, and sometimes appears to lack normal emotional reactions. He is often extremely polite, seeking to please and to earn the approval of others. However, there’s still a part of him that acts as a mischievous child, and that leaks out from time to time.
Having experienced little in the way of friendship, Luccious does not expect kindness from others, and responds with curiosity and surprise when people do treat him well. Despite his immense power, and over all battle prowess, he tends to be easily distracted and somewhat absent-minded - mostly due to the fact that the Mists continue to feed his senses with overlapping stimuli from both the living and dead realms. He’s gotten better at being able to sort between them, but it’s still a challenge.
Skills and Abilities
- He was once a Dark Sygnus with control over Chaotic and dimensional magics. His current magical abilities are as of yet untested.
- His connection with the Mists can be difficult to sort through, but it also provides him with a flow of knowledge that he wouldn’t otherwise have. He just has to be shrewd to determine whether the knowledge he gets is a truth or a lie.
- He’s a fairly decent sword fighter in a pinch.
- He can choose to absorb the spirit energy of the nearby departed to empower himself. Though, he really would rather not.
- He’s lived through many ages as a Dark Sygnus – who knows what knowledge he’s come across and stashed away. He’s not going to make that readily apparent to others, either.
Items
Luccious’ Sword – Also called “Luccious’ Blade.” A dangerous relic created to slay Arweinydd. It was wielded by Sygni of the Time Before, it is imbued with the memories of those who once used it.
The sword tends to twist good intentions into dark ones, having a peculiar influence over those who use it. Despite the danger, Luccious appears to be able to wield the weapon to his advantage. Whether this is because the blade’s power has diminished or Luccious’ power has grown is unknown.
