Incrytan
The Key Crystal, created by Ben, was meant to oversee a connection to the existing elemental crystals on both the Blue Planet and the Red Moon. Its creation was to prevent theft of the lesser crystals of the Blue Planet and to bring them under control should they be stolen again. Obviously, Ben didn’t have a lot of trust in leaving the crystal artifacts in human hands.
Only… he didn’t consider what might happen if someone stole Incrytan instead. Which is exactly what happened in Coming of the Darkstar, Intermission 8.
Joran was instructed to steal Incrytan under the oversight of Suzume (Sparrow), who acted as a Watcher of the Arweinydd Zeni. Joran was then taken to the Blue Planet where her mission was to systematically begin the destruction and absorption of the crystals of that world.
Though it’s not fully confirmed, it’s thought that Zeni’s intention behind this was to free her brother, Zemi Dreigiau, whose life energies were sealed across the various elemental crystals of the Blue Planet. Only in their destruction, and the full destruction of Incrytan, would his awareness fully return and he be free.
Whether Zeni was aware that the crystals of the Blue Planet served to balance the seal on the Dark Sygnus, Luccious, through the crystals of the Red Moon is unknown. But in slowly breaking the seal on Zemi, Luccious also began to stir.
Suzume used Joran’s affection for Ben as a means of motivation. Joran was told how dangerous Incrytan was, being linked to Ben’s own life-essence, and that it would eventually become a mortal danger to him as its development continued. Joran believed this, and her actions in stealing Incrytan and destroying the lesser crystals were all in attempt to protect and save Ben.
However, during Joran’s mission, she was instructed to work with those who had less than benevolent purposes for herself and Incrytan. This included the Daear, Pren, and even led to the unsealing of Kip OMEGA (Darkstar Chapter 5, Part 1).
Eventually, Luccious became aware enough to begin to influence others. How he managed to connect with the Naugtylumini is unknown, but it was through Bradhoc Browning that Kip was given the means to get close enough to Joran take control of her, thus, bringing Incrytan under his command.
Eventually, Luccious was able to overcome Joran’s mind and wrest control of her from Kip, leading her to destroy the crystals of the Red Moon, and freeing him from captivity. After the battle between Sygni at the end of the story, Incrytan came to be in Suzume’s possession. She took it upon herself to destroy the artifact, which then cast her into the Mists (Darkstar Aftermath 1).
A single shard of Incrytan remained after the crystal’s destruction. This was given to Ben’s care, and he kept it as an artifact for a time – until Zemi Dreigiau instructed Chase to destroy it. This finally fully released Zemi to the Blue Planet (Wayrift Chapter 23, Page 22).
Note: As a result of Incrytan, all of the elemental crystals of the Blue Planet and Red Moon no longer exist in the Darkstar dimension.
