Small Site Optimizations
Date: February 13, 2025
I’ve made a few small changes to the site that should help optimize loading times. Note: You’ll have to Shift+Refresh the site to see these changes – they are currently live!
I’ve noticed in the site stats that the page-by-page archives are being utilized, which I’m happy to see! However, this means two things:
- More pages are being accessed to read a chapter
- More resources are being used to read a chapter
This isn’t a bad thing, but I’ve been thinking about how to streamline the site so that it loads faster and uses less (or smaller) resources. This hopefully means as a reader pages through, it will do away with the bit of pause for each page as things like the top banner and site background tries to load in before content.
Since Wayrift is content-heavy in terms of serving up comic images, it makes sense to cut back on unnecessary images built into the site. Due to that, I’ve made the following changes:
- Replaced the image header with a text header
- Replaced the image background with a gradient non-image background
- Replaced all of Book 1 and Book 3 thumbnail images with smaller versions (rather than making a direct link to the large comic page image). Book 2 is soon!
I’m also making room for the first chapter cover art that will go live for Chapter 90. I haven’t quite figured out the layout for the main page yet, but I want that image to be front and center, which was another reason I wanted to move away from using an image header banner.
As a small bonus, I also reorganized the Blog Archive Page by year.
Hopefully these things will help your reading go more smoothly! Thanks for stopping by!
